GLORY

The Story of Sister Rosetta Tharpe Sat 7 Sep 2024  At The Rep Centenary Square Broad Street Birmingham B1 2EP

On a rainy evening in May 1964, Granada Studios broadcast a gospel concert on a disused railway station in Manchester. For the star of the show, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, it was an opportunity to revive her gospel career. For young Brits, the chance to see the type of African American performer they’d only heard on the radio.

Presented by Simmer Down Arts, the UK’s premier Reggae Music and Arts Development Agency – don’t miss this excellent musical play, set in a black community radio station.

Glory recalls Rosetta’s life during a late night radio show presented by DJ Griot. Through Rosetta’s remarkable story of faith and sisterhood, connect with the deep, spiritual roots of rock ‘n’ roll and journey back through the music that broke the colour bar.
